The Woman This Center Is Named For
That name on the door belongs to Cheryl McLeskey, and it suits the place.
Cheryl has packed several lifetimes' worth of ambition into one. She's president and CEO of McLeskey, holds a pilot's license she uses to fly patients to treatment through the Angel Flight program, and became the first woman to win the White Marlin Open in the tournament's 42-year history, landing a 94-pound billfish and donating her winnings to charity in honor of her father.
She's also a breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed in 2017, she turned her own experience into action, helping raise more than $1 million toward cancer research and now serving on the board of Sentara Brock Cancer Center. Supporting the center that carries her name means a great deal to us.
Why Screening Early Makes Such a Difference
Some of the center's most important work happens well beyond its walls. Sentara's mobile 3D mammography units travel across southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, bringing screening directly to workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities that don't always have easy access to it.
For many women, that reach is the whole difference. A van parked nearby removes the usual reasons a screening slides down the to-do list: the long drive, the day off work, the extra cost.
And catching breast cancer early changes outcomes dramatically. When breast cancer is caught while still localized, before it has spread beyond the breast, the five-year relative survival rate is greater than 99%, according to the American Cancer Society.
